McDonald’s Fish McBites Review
Recently McDonald’s, for a limited time, introduced Fish McBites to their menu and I was offered a chance to review them. Usually when McDonalds introduces something new, I'm interested in learning more (and tasting) as long as these new food items fits my goal of highlighting the "healthier food options at McDonald’s"
Note: McDonalds provided me with Fish McBites coupons for review purpose in connection with posting this information. Views expressed are always 100% my own.
To be honest, while I loved the idea of adding more fish to the menu, I wasn't sure about trying out these new Fish McBites. As a parent I really like the idea of introducing fish to children in a fun way in the Happy Meal. However, I wasn't sure about the "fried" part.
After a very long conversation with someone from the McDonald’s pr team, where I voiced my concerns and learned more about the "process" of making the Fish McBites, I agreed to try them.
Overall the Fish McBites taste OK. Once you get past the "fried" crust, they taste very simple (not fishy) so kids wont have a problem eating them. My son tried his without a fuss, which says alot since he can be picky with new foods.
For my part I wish the Fish McBites were a bit bigger. They're about the size of popcorn chicken so your not really getting that much fish. I think another spin on the Fish McBites idea would be to make them the size of the nuggets or better as mini fish sandwiches. I think they could def work on this idea a bit more.
So what made me agree? A few things including
- Fish McBites are made from pieces of white flaky Alaska Pollack, that are responsibly sourced and wild caught from sustainable fisheries. McDonald’s USA has been sustainably sourcing its fish for more than 10 years.
- Fish McBites are available in three sizes – 3 oz. Snack (250 calories), 5 oz. Regular (370 calories) and 10 oz. Shareable (under 400 calories) as well as an option in the Happy Meal. So for those counting their calorie intake, the Fish McBites can fit into allowances
- The MouthOff McDonald’s App! Developed by Us Two, MouthOff partnered with McDonald’s to create a free mobile app available for Apple and Android users. The app utilizes a mobile device’s embedded microphone to react to the sound of a user’s voice and visually display one of four animated fish mouths moving along to the sounds.
Ok granted the last one had more to do with me then McDonald’s, but I'm being honest. I just thought it was a cool tie to get more families interested in fish. I enjoyed playing with the app and making the "lips" sing.
So overall, while I'm still not crazy about the "fried" part, I do like the idea behind Fish McBites. Fish McBites will be available at participating McDonald's restaurants until March 31, 2013.
