A look behind Marvel’s Cloak & Dagger Series

By June 28, 2018 ,

To learn more about this new Freeform series, I watched an advanced screening of Marvel’s Cloak & Dagger episodes, then joined a Q&A with Executive Producer Joe Pokaski, Andrea Roth (Melissa Bowen, Tandy’s mom), Miles Mussenden (Michael Johnson, Tyrone’s Dad) and Tom Lieber, Vice President of Original Programming at MARVEL TV.

Note: Marvel Studios, Freeform & Disney Junior invited me on this all expense paid trip to Los Angeles for the Ant-Man and The Wasp Event. While I will share different events and activities during the trip, any personal views expressed are always 100% my own.

The Cloak & Dagger series offers a different type of teen superhero story. One that's more about character background and personality building then about super powers and costumes. That background includes the families of the teen super heroes.

The Parenting Aspect

Joe: We want to make sure our drama is solid and hopefully tell different parent stories then you've seen on television.

Andrea: It's so interesting that I get to play the mom, which has complex interesting story-line, that I hope mom and dad viewers enjoy. I feel that this show is something for everybody. It isn't just for a young adult show. I think its because of the writing of the parents.

Miles The thing to me that is so compelling is that, even though it's superheros, these are real things that people go through and things that I think about as a father. To bring that and show that in a real way to me is just tremendous.

New Orleans Location

Part of it came from a discussion with Marvel, about getting a different look. New York is well protected with many superheros. When discussing New Orleans, something felt very Cloak and Dagger about it. It feels like it has a history older then the country.

They brought in writer's familiar with New Orleans and really researched the cities history and the fusion of the different religions. The more they learned about New Orleans, the more they were surprised that Cloak and Dagger wasn't there the whole time.

Where are the Cloak and Dagger Costumes

There's been a little hint of costumes in episode 4, but the focus is on each character and their story in the beginning.

The Look and Feel of the Show

Freeform and Marvel wanted to break the model a little bit. Wanted to have a very gritty different look and feel with the shooting styles. A hand held camera was used, to bring the feel of intimacy and uncertainty like a teen would feel growing up.

As you can see lots went into making Marvel’s Cloak & Dagger a new viewing experience to be enjoyed. While I think there's lots to be enjoyed, I do have to caution that it's more on a mature level. There is mature language, drug use and sexual scene that are not appropriate for younger viewers.
